Arsenal news: Ian Wright claims club will already be looking at Unai Emery replacements | Football | Sport

Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes his former side must already be looking at potential replacements for head coach Unai Emery.

Emery is under pressure from Arsenal supporters following a run of just one win in six matches in all competitions.

The Gunners are in danger of potentially missing out on Champions League qualification for a fourth consecutive season.

Wright cannot see Emery turning things around and says the club should already be sounding out managerial candidates to replace the Spaniard.

“For me it’s one of those where Arsenal, the management side of it, they should be at least starting to feel people out,” he told Premier League Productions.

“When we looked at the stats from [Arsene] Wenger to Emery there, it’s not improved at all, it’s actually regressed if we’re going to be totally honest.

“So they’ve got to be looking at candidates now because I can’t see how all of a sudden from now, coming up against an unbelievable Leicester side, and it was poor against Wolves, and before, I can’t see where it’s going to get better, I don’t know how it’s going to be better.

“So you have to be thinking that Arsenal, they must be looking at people now. If they’re not, I want to know why not.”

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot agrees with Wright and does not think Emery should be given funds in the January transfer window to turn things around.

“If they’re going to give him a big cheque in January, it’s a whole different situation because then you’re now investing in that money,” Melchiot said.

“But if you’re not going to do that then I agree with what Wrighty says.

“No [I wouldn’t give Emery a big cheque], no. I have the time to wait for a manager but if you get a year and a half and you’re not showing me what your real direction is to bring this team to, I can’t give it.”
