Arsenal player ratings: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was on target twice against Watford
Arsenal suffered a second-half collapse against Watford as goals from Tom Cleverley and Roberto Pereyra earned the Hornets a share of the points in a dramatic draw.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a double before the break to put the Gunners in control but a dreadful mistake from Sokratis Papastathopoulos allowed the home side back into the match.
David Luiz was then at fault as the Brazilian brought down Pereyra for a penalty, and Emery’s side were lucky to hang on for a share of the spoils as Watford pushed for a winner.
Express Sport have rated how the Arsenal players performed during their clash with Watford – but do you agree?
Arsenal player ratings vs Watford – Premier League
GK: Bernd Leno – 7
Tipped over Cleverley’s drive in the opening stages and also made a good stop from Gerard Deulofeu but caused frustration with his persistence on playing goal kicks short which inevitably led to trouble.
However, the German made a brilliant save from Abdoulaye Doucoure in the closing seconds to preserve a point and can be reasonably pleased with his display.
RB: Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 6
Given a thorough examination of his defensive capabilities in the opening half an hour and looked very nervous under pressure.
However, the 22-year-old stood up to the test and began to offer a greater threat in attack, breaking forward well to set up the second.
Arsenal player ratings: Ainsley Maitland-Niles played in Aubameyang for the second goal
CB: Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 3
Was having a fairly uneventful afternoon until a major brain-fade saw him play a pass straight at Deulofeu following a short goal kick, with Cleverley then slamming in first time.
Surprisingly played the peacemaker as tempers boiled over before half-time, with the Greek international attempting to calm compatriot Jose Holebas, but was drawn out of position far too often and never looked comfortably on the ball.
CB: David Luiz – 4
Showed his range of passing when Arsenal eventually got up to speed and established a foothold in the game and was generally solid defensively for the opening hour.
However, a smart turn by Ismaila Sarr left him rooted before the Brazilian clumsily brought down Pereyra on the edge of the area – once again demonstrating his unreliable streak with a nightmare closing 30 minutes.
LB: Sead Kolasinac – 5
Full of energy on the left flank in the opening 45 and made the opener with a surging run at the heart of the Watford rearguard, eventually playing in Aubameyang.
Went in the book for chopping down Will Hughes and struggled to offer an outlet after the break, while his positional sense defensively left plenty to be desired as Watford gained momentum.
Arsenal player ratings: Sead Kolasinac provided the assist for the opener
CM: Granit Xhaka – 4
Too slow in possession and allowed the likes of Deulofeu, Cleverley and Hughes plenty of time around the edge of the Gunners’ box.
Went close with a curling effort just over the bar but lucky not be hooked when Emery rang the changes and wasted good opportunities late on with wasteful passing.
CM: Matteo Guendouzi – 6
A real whirlwind adding dynamism and enthusiasm to the Arsenal midfield, although his decision-making was not always of the highest class.
Caught in possession on the edge of his own area from one of Leno’s troublesome goal kicks and was lucky to get away with another sloppy piece of work shortly after the break.
First into the ruckus when Nicolas Pepe and Holebas came together and picked up a booking for his trouble, although the Frenchman’s popularity will have gone through the roof among the fanbase due to his confrontational attitude.
RAM: Nicolas Pepe – 6
A display full of clever touches and tidy control, with the Ivorian always providing a threat whenever he ran at the Hornets back line.
Appeared to kick out at Holebas before thinking better of it as Guendouzi barged in to throw his weight around.
Arsenal player ratings: Nicolas Pepe went close with a curling effort
CAM: Mesut Ozil – 7
Was making his first appearance of the campaign after a turbulent pre-season and looked a little leggy as he tried to get involved in the opening minutes.
However, he showed fantastic vision to play in Maitland-Niles for the second goal and drifted into some lovely areas as he tried to push Arsenal higher up the pitch.
LAM: Dani Ceballos – 6
Made the challenge that allowed Kolasinac to drive forward for the first and can feel hard done-by when he was subbed early after a tidy, probing display.
ST: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 8
Absolutely clinical to take his first chance of the match with a touch, turn and finish after great work from Koranic.
Came alive after that and added a second with a tap-in from Maitland-Niles’ cross while he got through plenty of defensive work as his side crumbled under pressure.
The Gabon striker was often found helping out in the left-back slot while he carried the ball manfully as he tried to drag the Gunners forward.
