A neighbour has described hearing big explosions as fire tore through a Rockhampton house where a body was later found.
Police are treating Thursday’s early morning blaze at Lakes Creek as suspicious.
They have not released the gender or the age of the person who died in the house, which has been declared a crime scene.
Neighbour Carol Cockerell called triple 0 after hearing a loud bang and going to her front door, where she saw flames engulfing the house about 2.30am.
“It was really quite high, going off,” she told the ABC.
“When all the fire was going up, we had pieces coming over here and on the roof. So my husband got the hose out and started hosing it to make doubly sure that nothing caught on fire here, I mean the explosions were pretty big.”
Detectives and fire investigators remain at the Hill Street property, with police due to update the media later on Thursday.
Paramedics assessed one person at the fire scene. They did not release the age or gender of that person, who wasn’t injured.
