Chelsea will have to cope without Jorginho for the visit of Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace in the early kick-off due to his one-game suspension for receiving five yellow cards.
That enforced change could see N’Golo Kante return to the line-up as he steps up in his return from injury, but Mason Mount could miss out.
The 20-year-old needed his ankle to be strapped after the 4-4 draw with Ajax in the Champions League on Tuesday and might not be risked ahead of the international break, but could still come through a late fitness test.
Frank Lampard confirmed on Friday that Ross Barkley will not be available following a hamstring injury suffered in training last week.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Marco van Ginkel and Antonio Rudiger are also out of contention with long-term Achilles, knee and groin injuries respectively and Express Sport understands that the latter will be out for at least another month following surgery.
Lampard told talkSPORT of the returning Kante: “I think he’s a fantastic player.
“When I came in I was so excited to work with him.
“He’s world class and I need him, no doubt.
“It’s brilliant for us all that he’s back.
“He’s had little niggles, now we’ve got him hopefully looking good.”
The former England midfielder has also hinted that he might utilise a different system for their London derby in the wake Jorginho’s absence.
He said: “I think one thing we have done is try to be adaptable.
“All of them, even Mason, they can all do lots of parts of the midfield game.
“They can all do a lot, whoever I pick, you like to think they’ll give you a good performance.”
