Lewis Hamilton to Red Bull comment made by Christian Horner amid Max Verstappen rumours | F1 | Sport

But Red Bull chief Christian Horner has denied any contact between Mercedes chief Toto Wolff over the Dutch driver.

Verstappen has a clause in his contract which would allow him to move next season.

But Horner is relaxed in the situation and has likened it to Lewis Hamilton moving to Red Bull.

He says the fact Verstappen has not spoken to Mercedes is no different to the world champion not talking about a switch of his own.

Horner explained to the official F1 website: “Toto has certainly not spoken to me about it.

“He speaks to almost every driver on the grid, so I would think if he has had a conversation it’s been direct not through the team.

“The situation with Max is clear and as with other drivers there are always trigger points.

“But in terms of having those two in one team, I haven’t heard from Lewis either that he wants to join next year.”

Max Verstappen has taken the fight to Hamilton in recent races whetting the appetite of F1 fans.

That has led to increased speculation the two best drivers on the grid could link up together at Mercedes.

Hamilton is a massive 62 points clear of Valtteri Bottas in the standings this season.

Verstappen is a further seven points back in the Red Bull as Hamilton closes in on becoming a six-time champion.

Red Bull have announced that Alexander Albon will replace Pierre Gasly for the remainder of the season.

Horner said: “I think [it’s] very tough. If you go up against Verstappen at the moment, for me arguably he is the most in-form driver on the grid.

“That’s an enormous barometer for any driver to go up and be measured against.

“As a competitor you always want to measure yourself against the best that you can.

“So, he’s a benchmark that obviously Pierre is measuring himself against.”

F1 returns with the Belgian Grand Prix on September 1.
