Liverpool fans hit out at as Gary Neville claims Virgil van Dijk is scared of Nicolas Pepe | Football | Sport

Unai Emery handed Pepe his first start for the Gunners yesterday.

But he was unable to help Arsenal from losing 3-1 to the Champions League holders at Anfield.

A Mohamed Salah double and Joel Matip header saw Jurgen Klopp’s side earn all three points.

Early in the game Manchester United hero Gary Neville claimed Virgil van Dijk looked nervous up against Pepe.

And that didn’t go down well with Liverpool fans on social media.

One said: “Neville is obsessed with the idea that Van Dijk is scared of Pepe. He isn’t.

“He’s just never played against him before so is working him out. He’ll have him for lunch soon enough.”

Another added: “Gary Neville talking as if Pepe gave Van Dijk a torrid time first half. Not for me.

“Looks lively that lad but once Virgil sized him up a bit, there was only one winner. Walk around him. #colossus”.

A third explained: “Gary Neville really spent the first half hour trying to convince us that Van Dijk was afraid of Pepe don’t get me wrong Pepe is a tasty player but Van Dijk isn’t afraid of any player lmao”.

“Neville isn’t half over egging this whole Pepe vs Van Dijk thing,” one more said.

Van Dijk ended up standing up to the test provided by Pepe with the record signing unable to make a difference for his side.

After the match Jurgen Klopp was delighted with all three points.

He said: “I was really happy with a lot of parts of the game; I think everything we did well in the first four games we did tonight for longer, more precise and better tuned.

“I loved the desire, the passion, the power and the energy that we put into this game.

“It made us really uncomfortable to play against, which is what we wanted and so we deserved the first goal.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action next weekend when they take on Burnley before the international break.
