Liberal Senator ‘surprised and disappointed’ following China visa cancellation 7:04

Liberal Senator James Paterson says he found it “surprising and disappointing” following China’s decision to cancel his visa before a planned visit to the country.

China is demanding Liberal MPs Andrew Hastie and James Paterson “repent and redress their mistakes” if they want to visit Beijing.

The pair were due to travel to the country as part of a study tour, however on Friday it was revealed their visas had been cancelled.

Both MPs have publicly criticised China for recent human rights abuses, as well as perceived attempts to exert influence in Australia.

“I’m an agnostic so repenting is not really my style,” Mr Paterson told Sky News Host Chris Kenny.

But I’m particularly not going to be repenting at the instruction or command of a foreign authoritarian power”.
