That’s according to United hero Gary Neville.
Martial signed for Manchester United in 2015 from Monaco for an initial £35m but has not been a consistent performer for the Red Devils since then.
The Frenchman was an unhappy figure under Jose Mourinho, who was sacked last December, but seemed to have been reinvigorated by the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
But toward the end of last season, Martial’s form dipped again, months after signing a new five-year contract with the club.
Against Chelsea on the first day of the season last weekend, however, Martial scored, having been played in the centre-forward role.
Martial has previously played for United on the left and the right, but the 23-year-old prefers a more central position.
Now that he’s being played more as a striker by Solskjaer, Gary Neville believes it’s time Martial started delivering for the club.
“Martial has not realised his potential on the left side for three or four years,” he told his self-titled Sky Sports podcast.
“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is probably thinking he wants to play centre forward, he’s a good finisher, ‘I have to give him that chance’.
“You could argue it’s to the detriment of Rashford.
“But if he can get his head around playing on the left and be comfortable and Martial can be a centre-forward then it’s worth giving him that chance.
“At Manchester United when there’s speculation around Martial leaving there’s been a big fear that he will go to another club and become one of the best players in the world because he has got that much talent.
“I think now is the time for Martial to deliver it.
“He is being given his chance as a centre-forward and scored a good goal today.”
United come up against Wolves in their second game of the season this weekend at Molineux.
