Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany believes Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is the Premier League’s best ever centre-back.
Liverpool’s defence has drastically improved since the Dutchman signed for them in January 2018 for £75million.
Van Dijk has already won the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award this term and is favourite to scoop up the Ballon d’Or prize.
Ex-City man Kompany, whose testimonial with the Premier League champions is being played this evening, spoke about some of the best centre-backs to grace England’s top flight.
And when he was asked whether he ranked himself as the best, the Anderlecht player-manager picked out Van Dijk instead.
“I never try to compare. My journey is different, I’ve had to deal with different tools and for me to not play this game, let’s not escape the irony,” he told the Liverpool Echo.
“So I’ve had to deal with that and I’ve tried to be substantial for my team.
“I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk.
“He’s not been on the scene as long as Terry, Ferdinand who have been around for a long time.
“But the signs he’s shown in the last few years show if he had been around longer he’d have been at the top for a long time.
“The Liverpool before Van Dijk and after are a completely different set up. I’ll give him that one.”
Liverpool are unbeaten this season and remain the only side in the Premier League with a 100 per cent record.
Last term, they lost out to Kompany’s City for Premier League glory by just a single point.
Kompany won four Premier Leagues, two FA Cups and three League Cups during his time at City.
